Pet fashions are news! Certainly, that’s what Mario DiFante and Alex
Cach had in mind when they introduced their Pet Fashion Week Expo last weekend
at New York’s Metropolitan Pavilion. Buyers, manufacturers and high-end
designers from all over the world gathered for their fall/holiday buying season.
The event was a huge success. The pet fashion look is bow wow fabulous! Credit
goes to the well-trained and well-behaved beautiful dogs on the runway! Hot
dog!
Exhibitors came from all over the world. Products exhibited included everything
for the pampered pet from carriers to perfume, to the latest in water bowl
and bed design. Les Poochs, Inc., Pet Business Magazine, NY Dog and Hollywood
Magazines, A Pet World and the Metropolitan Pavilion made the event possible.
Pet Fashion Week New York is a trade show that incorporates a broad range of
deluxe pet essentials with class and style.
With his Yorkshire terrier, Harry Duke is on the committee for the student
design competition. Red carpet designer Randolph Duke teams up with BoneSoir
Pet Couture to debut Regal Dog Collection of carriers, coats, hand beaded silk
gowns, a variety of harnesses, casual wear and accessories.
To celebrate this opening event, there was a black-tie charity fundraiser Saturday
evening to benefit animal welfare which included a silent auction, the Media
Choice Awards, a Student Design competition and the runway shows.
Innovation and change are important for any market, and the pet fashion industry
is no exception. The theme of the fashion show ranges from punk to old Hollywood
and back again. Looking to this industry’s next generation is the future
of pet fashion.
For the Student Design competition, designers were selected from the most prestigious
design schools on the east coast. These students have been challenged to create
three coordinating fashions for dogs and their owners. The winner will receive
the Pet Fashion Week Student Award, which will incorporate several full-page
ads in national publications, $5,000, a Harrods London window display, and
public appearances. The best look in this category is Precious Pup’s
black and white herringbone cape ensembles for the dog and owner.
Overall, the show featured wearable pieces for dogs. The dogs in the show are
absolutely beautiful. There are attractive color, patterns, and glitter pieces
for disco evenings. Many designers created show-stopping pet fashions, but
several designers didn’t take into consideration a dog’s lifestyle.
For pets, comfort and function are extremely important. Due to models carrying
many of the small dogs on the runway, if was difficult to see the dogs’ outfits.
The glittery collars and dog leashes went over well. Can you imagine a dog
wearing pants? The leggings keep their little legs warm; however, they shouldn’t
be too tight or too long.
Other pet cloaks in leather, felt, suede, fur and knit are very fashionable
yet functional. These pieces are becoming more and more necessary, given the
dip in temperatures during the winters. Good show!
